Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training in Ontario
If you work in Ontario, your employer has to make sure you complete basic health and safety awareness training. It’s the law, and it applies whether you’re stocking shelves, running a forklift or starting your first co-op placement.
Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps is our online course for it. You work through four short modules at your own speed, answer a few quiz questions along the way, and get your certificate as soon as you pass. Most people finish in about an hour.
We wrote it in plain language and built each module around a new worker named Jordan, so the rules feel like things that actually happen on the job and not just a list of sections from the Act.
What Is Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training?
Ontario Regulation 297/13, which sits under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), says employers must make sure every worker completes basic health and safety awareness training as soon as practicable. Employers can choose their own program, as long as it meets the requirements in the regulation.
The regulation spells out what the training has to cover: your rights and duties as a worker, what employers and supervisors are responsible for, how health and safety representatives and joint committees work, who the Ministry of Labour, WSIB and Ontario’s health and safety associations are and what they do, common workplace hazards, WHMIS, and occupational illness. Our course is built around those topics.
This is general training. Your employer still has to teach you about the specific hazards, equipment and emergency plans at your own workplace, and this course is meant to be the foundation for that, not a substitute for it.
Worker Health and Safety Awareness Course Outline
The course follows four steps, one per module. Each module includes a short scenario with Jordan and a few questions to think through before you move on.
| Module 1: Get On Board |
Who is responsible for what at work. Covers the duties of employers, supervisors and workers under the OHSA, your rights to know, to participate and to refuse unsafe work, and protection from reprisal. |
| Module 2: Get in the Know |
How to spot hazards and how they get controlled. Covers physical, chemical, biological and psychosocial hazards, occupational illness and latency, the hierarchy of controls, and WHMIS. |
| Module 3: Get Involved |
How workers take part in keeping a workplace safe. Covers health and safety representatives, joint health and safety committees, what has to be posted at your workplace, and how to raise a concern. |
| Module 4: Get More Help |
What to do when a problem doesn’t get fixed. Covers the work refusal process, the right to stop work, reprisal protection, and who to call, including the Ministry of Labour, WSIB and the health and safety associations. |
| Quizzes |
Multiple choice and true or false questions at the end of each module, plus a final quiz at the end of the course. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Who should take the Worker Health and Safety Awareness course?
Anyone who works in an Ontario workplace covered by the OHSA and hasn’t yet completed basic health and safety awareness training. That includes new hires, part-time and seasonal workers, and students on work placements. Supervisors have their own separate training requirement under the same regulation, so this course is for workers.
Is health and safety awareness training mandatory in Ontario?
Yes. Under Ontario Regulation 297/13, employers have to make sure every worker completes basic health and safety awareness training as soon as practicable. Employers also have to keep a record that the training was done.
How long does the course take?
Most people finish in about an hour. It depends on how quickly you read and how long you spend on the scenarios and quizzes.
How often do I need to take it?
Ontario’s regulation doesn’t set an expiry date or a renewal interval for basic awareness training, so there’s no schedule you have to retake it on. Some employers do offer refresher training, so it’s worth checking what yours expects.
Do I receive a certificate?
Yes. Once you pass, your certificate is available to download or print right away. It’s proof that you completed the course.
Does this replace the training my employer gives me?
No. This course covers the general basics. Your employer still has to train you on the specific hazards, equipment, procedures and emergency plans at your workplace.
I already did this training at a previous job. Do I need to take it again?
You can give a new employer proof of equivalent training, but they have to check that it covered everything the regulation requires. It’s worth asking them before you buy.
Will this course work if I’m outside Ontario?
It’s written for Ontario, so it follows Ontario’s OHSA and regulations. Other provinces and federally regulated workplaces have their own rules, so check what applies to you before you enrol.
